The exact origin of the guayabera remains part history and part folklore.
One of the best-known stories tells of a Cuban farmer who asked his wife to make him a lightweight shirt with several pockets for carrying the items he needed throughout the day. Another theory connects the early guayabera to garments worn by Spanish soldiers and rural workers during the late nineteenth century.

Although its precise beginnings are still debated, the guayabera became closely associated with life in the Cuban countryside before gaining popularity throughout Havana and the rest of the Caribbean.
By the twentieth century, its distinctive four-pocket design and carefully sewn pleats had become recognizable symbols of Cuban dress.
